Fundraising FAQs
The information below provides answers to some frequently asked questions. Please contact our chapter Fundraising Chair whenever you need more information.
Q. In the letter writing campaign, what do I tell people if they want a
receipt?
A. The chapter does not issue receipts to donors, unless the donation is for $250 or greater?
Q. Are contributions raised by the Letter Writing Campaign tax deductible for the donor?
A. Contributions in response to your fundraising letters are
tax deductible for the donor to the extent allowed by law.
Q. Can I turn in cash?
A. Most people who contribute use checks so that they have a record for tax purposes. If necessary, the volunteer or parents should convert cash into checks. The checks should be labeled as “converted cash.”
Q. What if I am not able to participate in the Letter Writing Campaign?
A. Each volunteer/family is jointly responsible for fundraising by writing at least 100 fundraising letters. The chapter supports this policy by training volunteers to do this effectively. There are no exceptions to this policy.
Q. Does the amount received through fundraising affect the country or program placement?
A. No.
Q. If my son or daughter drops out of Amigos, can those donors on our list who contributed to the organization receive refunds on those donations?
A. The contributions donated so generously by the people on your list were made to the Amigos organization and not to a specific individual. As a result, those contributions cannot be refunded.
Q. How can a volunteer keep the Chapter’s Board happy?
A. Three things will insure an amicable relationship:
- Complete your fundraising letters correctly.
- Turn in your fundraising letters on time.
- Turn in the checks you receive from your donors at the next training meeting.
Q. How can a volunteer keep his or her donors happy?
A. Two things will insure a positive, supportive relationship between you and your donors:
- Write a thank-you note to each donor as soon as you receive the contribution.
- Write a letter at the end of the summer to your donors describing your experiences in Latin America. Thank them again for making your experience possible.
