Amigos de las Américas Protocol for Technology and Communication

In order to preserve the integrity of the Volunteer experience, the AMIGOS International Office
strongly discourages Volunteers from taking the following technologies with them to Latin
America:

1. Satellite phones
2. Cell phones (including SMART phones, i-Phones, Blackberries, PDAs, etc.)
3. GPS tracking devices

Bringing and/or using these technologies while serving as an AMIGOS Volunteer is not
considered a violation of the Standards of Conduct and Community Behavior.  Volunteers need
to be made aware that frequent telephone or email communication with family and friends back
home or using social networking websites can negatively affect their ability to be fully immersed
in another culture and to be accepted as a mature and capable leader in their host communities.

If use of the above devices, the internet, video and/or photo technologies interferes with the
health, safety or productivity of the Volunteer or partnership, circumvents the CALM Plan,
compromises the reputation of AMIGOS or is perceived to be culturally disrespectful, it will be
considered a rule violation.  Further, Volunteers need to realize that when using e-mail or the
internet during the summer, comments and photos can be misconstrued, misinterpreted or
circulated by others who will have limited contextual understanding.
